The beginning of Laxman’s Test Cricket career was made in the year 1996 with a Test match against South Africa played at Ahmedabad. Since the year 1997, he had to change his position in the batting line-up and began to open the innings now.

In a Cricket tour of Australia in January 2000, he scored 167 runs. He found the opening position in the batting line-up not being favorable to him, so he gave up international cricket and returned to domestic cricket again. He stayed out of the Test team for almost an year, and joined again in the later phase of the year 2000. Laxman is not considered to be quite a good runner between the wickets, and has not played in the Cricket World Cup despite having played 100 Test matches.

Throughout his Test Cricket career till now, V.V.S. Laxman has played 105 Test matches and scored 6741 runs including 14 centuries and 39 half-centuries. He had a Batting Average of 45.24 runs with his highest score being 281 runs.
